Not Just For Competition Flying - a Great 1st Helicopter Recovery kit.

Posted by Timothy Mauk on 27th Dec 2016

I built one of these as my first helicopter recovery kit. For the price it is a great value, and I have flown mine about a dozen times.
The build will present a few new challenges if you have not built a helicopter recovery model before, but it is straight forward. This rocket flies best unfinished. TIP - don't try to block sand the fins, you will break off the fin tab (if you do, just glue it back together with some CA).
Store the rocket with the blades extended, or with the rubber bands removed, as they will lose elasticity, resulting in a slower deployment of the blades for recovery. They can also be inexpensively replaced and I think my kit included extras.
Mine flies best on A10-3 or 1/2A3-2.
The A3-4T has a delay that is a bit too long (but not so long as to result in a lawn dart).
I have no interest in competition flying, but still enjoy this rocket. It still surprises people at launches that haven't seen helicopter recovery. I haven't timed it, but it seems to hang forever up there with the blades spinning.
All in all - a great helicopter kit for the money.

    Sure fire contest winner!

Follow the instructions carefully and you will have an excellent helicopter recovery rocket. Very fun to build (just don't paint it for maximum hang time).

    helicopter rocket

Posted by Jeff on 23rd Dec 2016

Built three of these between my sons and I. Pretty straightforward and easy to build with great results. My 14 yo built his entirely on his own and the 10 yo built about 75% of it on his own.

    Top 5 NARAM model

Posted by MarkJ on 23rd Dec 2016

I used this at NARAM last summer and finished top 5!
If it were not for a bale of hay, it would have been top 3 or better.
